Sitka is such a wonderful place. I've been there four times. If you're on a budget you can stay at the local youth hostel at a Presbeterian Church or camp out. Also Baidarka Boats has rental kayaks. If you have the opportunity to go there in June or July they schedule the Sitka Summer Music Festival at that time which showcases world class classical music in the Centennial Building. In the past music critics from the Washington Post and the New York Times have done reviews on the festival. Also, the Shelton Jackson Museum has oodles of Native American history including a number of baidarkas and anoraks. The contrast of how well they lived within their environment and how wasteful we are is really striking, at least it was to me.
